Heat Treated Red Onions

Planted my red onion sets today and noticed they were "heat treated".

What does this mean and do I need to be aware of anything?

I have bought and sown the same.
You don't treat them any differnt, I have read that they take a bit longer to get going but once up and runnning they soon catch up with non treated sets.

Just out of intrest I paid £3.99 from T & M for about 60 sets, any body else got them cheaper than this, only I am already thinking of next years order

In theory it means they shouldn't bolt (try to flower) but you don't treat them any differently

The 'in theory' has never worked for me....Ive given up to red onions

From what I understand heat treated onion sets are held at a high temperature for several weeks which kills any embryo flower. In the process the bulbs are dried out more than normal sets and take longer to start shooting.

I have not grown treated red onions but white ones have been excellent with no bolters.

£4.50/130 organic heat-treated red onion sets from Garden Organic. All coming up now, we'll see about the bolting later.
