French Bean support
« on: April 11, 2011, 18:01 »
Im trying more French climbing beans this year,  hopefully to get more than 1 meals worth from them. Whats the support of choice ? I've tried wigwams and a frame in the past with poor results from both.

We've only grown dwarf french beans before and have found they do not perform at all if warmth is lacking. We're trying climbing french beans this year too for the first time and have built and sited a munty-style frame (its construction is very robust because of where we live :)). I hope to get a good crop from the frame and the lovely weather we are going to get. :D

Luckily for me my fences are large wire mesh, so I am using those for the first time

I always grow mine on the traditional canes crossed near the top with another across the top to stabilise them.

I had a poor year with Cobra climbing french beans, they just didn't want to get started, but the purple podded gave a really good crop.

Looking at the space I fear by the time I've over-engineered built a frame there will be no room left for the beans.  :(

I always grow mine on the traditional canes crossed near the top with another across the top to stabilise them.

What sort of spacing / plant density MoS ? I've really onlt got a 4x3 area to play with.

one cane every 8/9 inches and start with 1 plant per cane, then a few weeks later sow another bean direct for each cane.

with 8in spacings you should get 6 canes front and back with eventually 12 plants front and 12 plants back  :D :)
