Introducing Our Chicks - with photos
« on: April 11, 2011, 08:07 »
We have now had our chicks since Thursday when the eldest were a week old and the others 6 days. Seems like we have always had them. We made a decision not to name them until the cocks were sorted, (they are going back to the egg provider) but within 2 hours they were all named.
They are growing so quickly, we had to make a wire mesh lid for the box as they were starting to fly onto the rim. I went in for my morning cuddle and as soon as i took the lid off today, Esmerelda flew straight onto my upper arm. Will this box be big enough until we can start to put them outside, or do I need to get hubby onto making something else for them.
Only concern I have is that when I move them into another box when i clean their main box out Charlotte has a poo which is very runny, this has happened all 3 cleans so far, havent done it yet today. Is this just because she is a bit nervous at being moved as there are no signs of any when she is in the main box.
I have found lifting the drinks container up on some wood has been brilliant as prior to that i had to clean it out twice a day, but today it is still wood shaving free so that has worked a treat.
Just have to wait for the sexing, there are 2 that are so affectionate and clambour to climb on us if we put our hands in the box, really hope they arent boys.

They are gorgeous, ours are five weeks old and we bought auto sex chickens (ie ones that can be sexed on hatching) so we were sure they were girls.  They grow really fast.  We have four and they would  have outgrown your box by now.  We have them in an indoor rabbit hutch which seems just the right size.  we have also lifted their water up on to an upturned margarine carton to keep it clean (once they grow they can reach!) wish we had bought metal feeders as they constantly knock the lighter plastic ones over as they are so boisterous.  Good luck with the sexing- hope they are all girls!
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

They are so healthy and cute too!  Don't they grow fast though?
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Already so attached to them. Initially I did have the 2 lightest ones as my favourites as they always wanted to be touched. Now though they are all coming round to the idea that cuddles are nice. Even Mo who I am sure is a boy. Within a minute of getting the lid off them this morning 3 of them had flown onto my arm and knee.
