Netted Onion sets still being pulled out ??????????
« on: April 10, 2011, 21:39 »
I have two foot high mesh over my onions and still the odd one is no where near where I planted it !

Have I got a ghost or do mice play football at night ?

subsistence of earth and onions pushing down while putting roots make them pop out. nothing to do with netting. (strangely... you dont need to net onions... there are very less number of takers  :))
repeatedly visit the plot and plonk them in. should be allright within a week or two. :)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

I spent about a week pushing mine back in. I wish they'd do as they're told and stop trying to escape.

I have a theory which I am currently testing - that if the soil is loose enough the onions will root through it not push themselves out.

This year I planted my onion sets in very loose soil - forked, raked and fluffy. I made a shallow trench with a ridge to one side using a hoe, sat the onions along it, then just tipped the ridge over back into the trench to cover up the onions a bit. I didn't firm them down or water them in.

Currently all but 2 sets (out of 100) are growing well and I haven't had to reseat any. They are now firmly rooted. I 'test pulled' a few to see if they were still loose but they're not. Just need to wait and see how the final onions turn out now......

Maybe not for you but the pigeons play havoc with onions by us, netting is a must. At least you have explaind why mine are also popping out  :)

blackbirds pull them out ......we wondered what was doing it when we first started growing...we were informed by many a grower that it's the pesky blackbirds

The birds pull them out thinking they're tender greens. Pigeons will do that as well.

Yep! Blackbirds after the worms hiding in the roots are usually the culprits. Pigeons are not usually insect eaters and would not waste energy pulling out plants for no reward so not guilty in this case.
Crows will also pull plants to get at insects in the roots, rooks can do a lot of damage to fields of emerging maize.

I found squirrels do the same, living near a park- they forget where they have buried their nuts and dig randomly before realising the sets are not what they hoped for!
Either net or get used to replanting.
