What is this growing in our allotment?
« on: April 07, 2011, 20:59 »
Hi There,

Me and my partner have just taken over an allotment and are in the process of digging it over. However, there is a patch with these lovely looking plants, they sort of have 3 pointed dark green leaves and then one red flower coming out the middle...does anyone know what this can be? We don't want to dig them up if they could be of use?

Many thanks

Any chance of a pickee!    You could carefully dig it up and transfer it until you found out if it was wanted or not.   Cheers,   Tony.

If it is small and a bit like chickweed but with scarlet flowers it is scarlet pimpernel.

If not then we need pictures.

Agree with Salmo...I have loads of it - pull some up and leave some for the insects.

How do you mean what can this bush be attached too, the photo's a bit small but it doesn't look like a bush it looks a bit like a parsnip have you got more than 1 if so pull one up & see if it is or can you upload the photo bigger?

no it wont let me because of size limits.  There is only one bush on its own in the middle of the plot lol.  I wondered if it was a vegetable which is what i meant by attached.  That picture is meant to be portrait. so look at it side on..

Many thanks tho, i may just dig it up and see...

In that case it looks more like a parsnip, start by digging a little way from it,when the soil is loose get your hands in & clear the soil around it & if it is a parsnip dig it out & try it for your dinner it might be still ok & not 'woody' in the middle 8)
