Which veggies to follow on with to Over winter.
« on: April 05, 2011, 21:53 »
As its our first proper season on the Lotty we have no experience as to what is a natural
follower on the ground that will contain our ...............

Open Ground
....................

French beans
Dwarf beans
Early peas
Potatoes

or in the raised beds which contain
.....................................................

Garlic
Red Onions
Banana Shallots
Stutgarter Onions

I have not tried as yet to grow any winter crops, and although I have read it is good to dig in the roots of the previous veg to provide nutrients we would like to plant something on the same ground to over winter so its not a wasted area during the colder months.

any suggestions would be great, and my apols for not as yet being " rotation" aware.

Gazza   ;)

early peas and early potatoes can be followed by leeks (sow asp) or winter cabbage if you grow them in pots until you can put them in, or Autumn carrots

Turnips can follow an earlier crop as they are fairly fast maturing. I've also followed early potatoes with celery with good results but you'll have to start them soon and grow in pots till it's time to plant out.

I guess it must be pure luck that I have sown some Leeks last week in a polystyrene box
24 x 24 x 10ins deep with (zermatt pencil summer type and Lyon Prizetaker winter type
but I must be honest having not sown leeks from seed before I have no idea how long the germination/growing time period they would take to be big enough to plant.

If it had coincided with the end of the peas or 1st spuds it would have been luck and nothing else mumofstig, this is the problem with not knowing (as yet) what to sow and when in order to follow on from something else.

Cheers for the heads up though, ive written it in a word doc for next season as a reference
for me and jude to learn.
