PH Level
« on: April 03, 2011, 11:25 »
Ok Checked my PH level today after picking up a cheep soil probe says it's between 4 and 5 so I think the soil is ok am I right?

However when I put the probe in the pots filled with All Purpose compost I get NO Reading what's all that about?

I think a reading of 4 or 5 is low and quite Acidic.

4 or 5 would be fine for Spuds but not good for a lot of other Cultivations and Brassica's would like it more Alkaline or to be entirely correct Clubroot which can badly affect the root system of Brassica's would flourish on Acidic soil.

Assuming the compost in your pots isn't dry (?) I think you have just joined the club for people who don't think cheap pH meters are very reliable; to get an acid reading in one place and no reading in another is not very encouraging!

Chemical pH testing kits are more faff but are cheap and reliable; whatever technique you use you need to test at a reasonable depth (i.e. where the roots are actually growing) and in more than one place.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

No reading could just as easy be no movement eg neutral.

Forget the scale Bill and do a comparison between as many growing medium as you can.
