Couple of quick questions!
« on: April 03, 2011, 07:34 »
Some quickies for you ever so helpful folks.

I've lost one of the polycarbonate roof  panels in the greenhouse in the recent winds - anyone know where I can get one fairly cheapish?

While I'm looking for a replacement can I keep anything in the greenhouse - will it actually help protect plants with a panel missing?

I've got about 24 Tom plantlets on the window sill that need potting on - can they go in the greenhouse (with or without missing panel, lol) now or will it still be too cold for them?

and last one - I've got cauli and brussels coming through on the window sill - startingto go a bit leggy. I think it's too warm for them in the house - will they be all right re potted into the greenhouse?

Thanks for your time people!

Brussels don't need heat so they will be fine with the panel missing. If it was me I would cover the roof with some polythene until you find some panel at the right price. As for the tomatoes well mine won't go into the unheated green house for a few more weeks yet, they need at least 10degrees and it's not constantly above that at the moment

1. Don't know.  Try the design and construction board.

2. It will still be too cold, even if you didn't have a hole in the roof.  Under 10 degrees celsius and they will sulk; we can get frosts up till the end of May.

3. Brassicas don't like warmth and shouldn't have been started off indoors.  You run the risk of damaging them with kindness.  Get them out into the greenhouse pronto - but cover them at night for the first week or so in order to harden them off.

Am I better off just re sowing some cauli's and brussels in the greenhouse?

I had the same problem sowed caulis indoors because it was too cold and overcast outside. Just repot them up to the first leaves they will be fine - I think the extra depth helps when they go into their final spot.

Get the hole left covered by anything you can or you may find the wind will get inside your greenhouse and bring the lot down. Keep the door open untill you fix the gap.

I reglazed half my smaller greenhouse with polycarb and had problems with panes blowing out. I've stopped them doing so with sections of old aluminium curtain rail, cut just over 2' and fitted between the uprights in the middle of the pane...

My seedling shelving is 140cm x 80cm has 5 shelves each of which takes 3 double trays.
I have insulated this with bubble wrap in a corner of the greenhouse and it seems to be working fine with very good germination.

There's nothing stopping you from fixing polycarb panels with small nuts and bolts, unlike glass you can drill both the panel and the frame.
