Try bokashi if you want to compost your food waste.

It breaks down very well, both in soil and in the compost bin.

Just a thought, I have been given a garden vac/shredder in good working order.  This afternoon I used it to collect a load of black sunflower husks from under the bird table and it shredded these quite finely.  Rather than get rid of them, can I use them in the compost bins?

Ants move into areas that are static. so if you turn your compost every 2 weeks or so, you'll find they've moved away as their colonies require stability in the medium. You'll also get your compost cooking faster and make it useable sooner.

I keep a lidded container on the kitchen windowsil for all the veg fruit egg teabag waste etc.  Its amazing how quickly it fills up and saves lots of little trips to the compost.
