red mite / hens and young chicks HELP!
« on: March 30, 2011, 19:39 »
Hi

Today we have discovered red mite in our henhouse.

We have two houses - one with 4 cockerels in and
another with
3 hens and 13 x 4 wk old chicks that we have just introduced,
1 broody hen that has been sitting on her eggs for about a week now (seperated off) and 2 hens with 2 x 3 day old chicks (seperated off).
The henhouse is big with 3 differents floors so although separated they are all in the same house.  ..  a bit complicated.

My partner has today put two alternative houses into the run and cut off the main house ready for treatment.

Any ideas on how best to get rid of them?

Also a little worried about the 2 day old chicks.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as we've only had chickens for 3 years and have never come across this before.

Thanks

I am not a chicken keeper so won't start to specifically advise you.

However, until someone comes along, can I suggest you use the search facility?  You can use advanced search to narrow down your search to the Hen House board - there have been lots of previous posts about this so you will find what you need there.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

you need to clean the infected coop out then spray with poultry shield and wait until it dries. After this use Diatomous earth, then put clean fresh bedding in. You may need to repeat this treatment in a week or so just in case you have any more redmite that escaped the first treatment.
Staffies are softer than you think.
