Harvesting today
« on: August 07, 2006, 18:38 »
Well, I realised a lot of the fruit in particular in my allotment was ripe, so I've just been out harvesting and picked :

6 good sized courgettes - and 1 about the size of a marrow that I hadn't realised was there

2 Cucumbers

1lb black gooseberries - had hoped for more, but it's years since Ive had them fresh, so I'm happy

about 4lb of plums so far, and lots more on the tree

4lb of blackcurrants

Not bad, off an allotment that's 8m*12m, with 2/3 of that not for growing on.
My aim this year (we only took over, what was then a jungle of weeds in April/May), was just one edible item, and I've far surpassed that :)

The gooseberries in particular are gorgeous, and will be going into jam later :)
Organic where possible, unless it involves the snails that now seem to be eating the slug pellets for fun

The gooseberries were with the allotment when I took it over, so I have no idea what variety they are, all I know is, if I don't turn them into jam fast, I'll have eaten them!

I'm totally amazed by what I've had from the garden so far, and that's not even including everything that will be ready before long, such as tomatoes (I was late starting), fennel, beetroot, numerous herbs, chilli's etc.

On the nickname point, since taking over the garden, I've already lost about 2stone :tongue2:
