Squash: so long as they aare green and upright they are living, they tend not to put a lot of growth on until they decide to start to fruit, prob around august then they will grow like triffids.
Chillies: Just let them grow, I always allow mine to do whatever they want.
Cukes: It is probably still to early for them to go outside, the slightest bit of ground frost will kill them, I would aim to get them out at the back end of may and I would aim at 9 inches between each, thats what I use in the G house.
Cabbage: I transplant at the fourth propper leaf stage, I dont net but many do.
Onions: dont worry about birds, onion fly is the worst vermin, dont break any leaves around may, this is the first hatching of the fly.
Others will of course give slightly different advice but its all valid.

Punk isn't dead...it's underground where it belongs. If it comes to the surface it's no longer punk...it's Green Day!

Not different from Aidy, but would add that of the crops you are growing cucumbers can be the most difficult to keep going, especially in the early part of their growing season.

(There's an oft-repeated saying on here that "every day a cucumber plant wakes up looking for a new excuse to die!)

Mostly, they don't like cold and they don't like being wet around the stem; they should be about the last tender vegetable to go out into the garden after being very carefully hardened off.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older
