Hawthorn Trees...
« on: March 28, 2011, 14:01 »
Afternoon all,

A quick question about some Hawthorn trees I've got growing around the boundaries of my garden that I don't want!

I've been cutting them back to trunks and a height of around 5ft, and this looks brilliant, nice and tidy, but I'm not sure what to do with them once I've finished cutting back.  Will they grow back from the trunk/put up suckers?  How easy it to kill them completely?

Anyone out there done this before?!

Hawthorns are tough things and farmers lay hedges by almost severing the trunks at an angle. They may well frow back so I would use a tough weedkiller such as Roootout. You may need to drill holes in the cut surface and glug it in there.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

...or cut them off as low as you can manage then dry the logs out thoroughly - thorn has a wonderful heat content and now is the time to prepare your logs for next Christmas!

Given half a chance however they will try and regenerate as Goosegirl warns, even from the two foot high stumps!
The Dales - probably fingerprint marks where God's hand touched the world

Cut them down as low as you can and drill some 16mm holes in the top of the stump with a good wood drill bit. Fill the holes with a decent weedkiller Rootout and brushkiller comes to mind and cover the stump with polythene.

I've killed blackthorn with roundup weedkiller.Wait until the leaves are fully open and put some diesel in with the water when topping up to the required measurment.About 10% diesel should do it.So if you need 1 litre of water mix it 900ml water 100ml diesel. The diesel helps the weedkiller stick to the leaves.
