When is a hen broody?
« on: March 27, 2011, 11:39 »
Ive got 8 hens and three cockerals, the boys are behaving like boys but im a bit confused about the hens.I have hens who lay in the coop and hens who dont, ive found that a RIR and a barndelver lay their eggs and sit on them for a few hours then they go walk about when i lift the eggs they are cold.

so does a "broody" hen sit on her eggs 23 hours out of the day? or do they only have to warm them up on occassion?

A broody will only leave to eat drink and have the occasional dustbath, the rest of the time she will sit on her (or any one elses!) eggs.  She will kind of spread herself out so she is sat quite flat and will not want you close, if you go up to her she will chunter and complain and I wouldn't recommend stretching out a hand!!

ive been down the yard all day today and so far,the RIR layed the egg, bluebell No1 has sat on it,now the light sussex is on it and bluebell n02 is waiting her turn.

Strange but very entertaining creatures

im hoping that one of my girls turns broody as i was to buy some fertilised eggs.

I would also love one of my girls to go broody but that's hens for you  ::).  When you don't want them to go broody they go broody at the drop of a hat.  When you do want one to go broody none of them feels like it.  :D
