soft winter onions
« on: March 27, 2011, 11:31 »
Have just joined the forum and wonder if anyone could give me some advice about my winter onioins. I received some Red Cross onion sets free with a seed order and planted these in December. The tops are growing well and are green and healthy looking but the actual onion bulb is very soft and still the same size. Is this normal or will I need to give up on them? Look forward to your thoughts. Thanks

I think the bulbs have had it, as they say.

Hi tillyt, welcome to the forums.

Sorry to say that I disagree with the last.

The bulbs will be putting on top growth at the moment and will fill out when they are ready.

Stick with them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yep - fully agree with others that yours will probably be OK. Same happened to me last year - they got through the winter looking like leeks, then they fattened up nicely.
