Rhubarb forcers ...
« on: August 07, 2006, 12:33 »
... I can't quite contain my excitement.  I managed to get two rhubarb forcers at the massively discounted price of £5.99 and £9.99 each.

The smaller one is about 2ft high and 18 inches in diameter and the larger one is about 3ft high and 2 ft in diameter.  Both in terracotta ... woohoo!!  Early rhubarb for me, and a cute looking allotment to boot!

eesh! Lucky! Those things go for £100 a piece normally!
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

... I couldn't believe my lil eyes ... managed to get the smaller one in my car (not the most practical ever, two seater convertible), had to borrow my soon to be ex husband's subaru to go get the bigger one.

I've been looking at them for ages ... I reckon I've saved myself a fortune.

can I embarrass myself again and ask another stupid question: what are rhubarb forcers?

You should have kept quiet, then I would have asked the stupid question ;)

So come on then, what are they?

Cheers,

Mike

They're very posh chimney pots with lids more or less. You put it over the rhubarb in the late winter and the rhubarb strains to the light at the top (i believe the lid is there for when there's frosts at night?) and it gets very light pink and thin and tender stalks.

You can use plastic bins with a hole cut in the bottom. Turn it over and place it on top of the rhubarb. Just means you get it a bit quicker (hence 'forcing') and it's supposed to be sweeter and more tender.

I wouldn't put them forcers on MY allotment. They are sure to walk. If you had your eye on them someone will have an eye on them too! On the other hand, maybe your allotment is secure? Lucky you.
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

We've had a few problems ...

... in the past apparently, but not since I got my plot.

The site is next to a wetlands centre and there are always lots of people around, emptying their dogs as it were.

And to be honest, the biggest one would take some nicking ... I'm not the girly flibbertygibbet I look and it took me three goes to get it the full length of the allotment.  And it was too heavy for my poor wheelbarrow to contend with!
