White camelia - browning flowers?
« on: March 26, 2011, 10:06 »
Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can help with this. I have a white camelia in the flower bed which is starting to flower but the petals are rapidly turning brown.

What to do?

Thats what I thought at first, but we havent had a frost since they started to come out a couple of weeks ago.....

Maybe its an iron deficiency as the leaves are a bit chlorotic and very chlorotic on the other one......

Off down the nursery again!

Browning is normally caused by morning sun shining on frost covered plants. If they are in pot's move them to where thay can thaw before the sun shines on them.

I'm afraid I'll go with the frost answer as well.  You may not have seen it, but even a couple of hours of frost during the night can affect early flowering plants.

Iron deficiency could be a cause, but it's a pretty rare affliction in most household gardens.

The final cause I can think of is petal blight, especially in moist wet conditions.  Could this be the case?

I grow camelia's and like everyone has said before it's more likely to be frost.

Do they get morning sun if so the dew will not be off them before the sun is on them & they are probably getting scorched particularly if you've had some lovely sunny days like we have had. :(

I'm not going to help much here but, we also have a white camelia with the same affliction.

It has always suffered in this way.
It is in an area shaded by pine & birch trees.
It is up against a fence.
It faces West.
It never has any direct sun (except in high summer, & then only late evening)
The only sun it does get is past midday ( I know frosts last all day sometimes)

I might post a pic tomorrow....if I can work out how
