left over onion sets

I for one tend to have a good handful of onion sets left over when I've finished planting up in my prepared bed. A friend on the allotments was saying he too often ends up this way and came up with a really novel idea. Select a plant pot and fill it with your growing medium,then tightly pack the remaining sets shoulder to shoulder in the pot leaving no spaces between each set. He tells me this produces some really nice spring onions because they are so tightly packed they have nowhere to go,except up. Got to be worth a try,dont you think?

My friends Dad never used to buy spring onion seeds, he said there were so many seeds in ordinary onion packets, he planted the lot and used the thinnings as spring onions!
