Coming to the end of her laying life?
« on: March 23, 2011, 19:07 »
Hi, some advice please, oh learn'ed ones.

I have a Ranger / typical little brown hybrid hen who is now approx 18 months old.  Over the last two months her egg production has dropped dramatically to perhaps the one egg ever 10 days or so.
The eggs she does lay are more like sausages as they're long, flat on one side and have creases running from pointy end to round, rather than just the odd wrinkle.  The white of the egg is also very watery when cracked, even when only a day old.

There are also some very large, very watery poohs (hardly any solids, just water and white bits) appearing around the garden and although I haven't witnessed that she is the culprit, I strongly suspect she is.

There is no signs of a moult in progress.

Is she likely to be sickening for anything, is it an impending moult or do you think she's just approaching chickeny menopause?  I've read my Haynes Manual from cover to cover but there are so many variables, I wondered if anyone had experienced this first hand?

Thank you for taking the time to read this rather long winded post!

Hello Foghorn-Leghorn,
I am not very experienced about this but it does sound as if she could be coming to the end of her laying life.  Hybrids are bred to lay prolifically for two years and then they are culled by commercial breeders.
It may be useful to check what I call the "usual suspects"
Does she have a temperature?
Does she have any little visitors - red mite or lice?
Is she eating, drinking and acting as usual?
How does her crop feel?
I'm sure someone with more experience will be along.  In the meantime Good Luck!

Have you not checked out our poo gallery??????????  Check your girls poo against the photos on here.  The hours will just fly by

Against each picture is an explanation as to what the ailment is, so you could get a quick diagnosis
