Hi from Norfolk - pruning a plum tree
« on: March 22, 2011, 16:10 »
Hi everyone, greetings from sunny Norfolk. My problem is,..I planted a plum tree, (Victoria), 2 years ago. Its gone wild and I'm not sure how to prune it. Is the same principle as an Apple tree? Not letting the branches cross etc!. Advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the site  :D

I'm moving your post over to Grow Your Own as it's a question about growing your own, and have amended the title to reflect what your question is about.

Feel free to pop back into the Welcome forum to tell us a bit about yourself; it would also help us to answer your questions if you could click your username to edit your forum profile to show Norfolk as your general location.  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Nice to have you join us spud4u.  :)

Summer prune your plum tree taking out any growth that you don't want.

Do it earlier or leave it later and you risk introducing infection ino the tree.  ;)

One thing they don`t seem to make clear is to make sure you remove all the prunings and burn or dispose of them, re silver leaf disease.

So try and wait until a nice sunny day in June. :D

So how about shredding the prunings and adding them to the compost heap?

That should be O.K. Just don`t leave the prunings around the base of the tree to attact the silver leaf fungus.
