Keeping feed rodent proof
« on: March 21, 2011, 09:49 »
I'm just looking into what to store the chicken feed in so that rats etc can't get into it. Is a metal lidded bin the best thing? Would a plastic storage bin be too lightweight?

I got several old metal dustbins off freecycle/freegle - these are heavy and rat proof  :D.
Each bin holds 3 sacks of feed which I make sure is completely empty before refilling - this prevents food going mouldy (I have several so I can rotate the storage and therefor never run out  :))
Staffies are softer than you think.

I use a pheasant feeder outside with a spring underneath for outdoors. The chooks can feed & no pests can get at the feed as it sealed. The girls learn to tap it & the feed falls out.

In answer to the plastic storage - rats would chew through it  :(

I use a heavy duty plastic dustbin with a lockable lid for feed and haven't had a rodent problem (yet!).  I've never seen the old fashioned galvanised dustbins in France though!

I had a plastic dustbin with a plastic lid which had a raised section in the centre and they chewed a hole through the top I will bring the camera home from work and take a photo to show you (perhaps we have more determined rats over hear  ::)
