« on: March 19, 2011, 20:26 »
i have some cucumbers growing at home and i think you are supposed to prick out certain leaves but not sure which ones.i have one stem with 3 other stems coming out of it,the leaves coming of it  are quite pointed unlike the first leaves that grew at the bottom of the central stem.what am i supposed to prune,is it anything yet

The first leaves are the seed leaves and will invariably look different to the true leaves that follow.

Pricking out refers to the transplanting of small seedlings from a seed tray into another pot to give them room to develop.

If your cukes produce both male and female flowers you need to remove the male ones, is this what you were meaning?

If they are ridge cucumber (outdoor) varieties they will need male and female flowers left on ;)
The seed packet should tell you what to do :)

I know, but I was trying to ascertain what the OP was meaning, not giving advice on cucumber cultivation.

But that's precisely what you were doing!

Mumofstig was clarifying the situation, as what you posted is not the case for all cucumbers.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Leave the leaves alone!

As already stated, pricking out refers to dealing with entire seedlings.

I like to prick out my Cucumbers pretty early. Certainly before first true leaf develops. The roots grow quickly, and its a mass of matted roots if I leave it too long, and I can feel and hear them tearing ... and I don't want to give the blighters yet-another-reason-to-die!

Me three (what is it about cukes that they try to die at every stage of growth - still they are worth it)

As above , don`t mess with them just move to bigger pots when you have to.

Fair point - at £1.40 or whatever they are a seed a non-germinator 3" pot of compost is neither here nort here (but I get 100% germination most years, so its moot)

For me propagator space is more of an issue - wouldn't have room for half a dozen 3" pots, the Cues get 1/3rd of a 1/4 sized seed tray and that's their lot!
