what to grow
« on: March 16, 2011, 17:49 »
As you know by me post count ive just signed up on here.

I have a patch of about 16ft by 5ft and i am wondering what would be the best to grow in this small space (maybe able to make 2 foot wider)

I like pea pods carrots and lettuce and would like to know if it's possible to grow these three within my patch and when is the time to sow them or with lettuce i read that you buy young ones and transplant? I'm probably wrong there.  :D

If i can manage to fit a new patch in i would also like to grow sweetcorn as that's another favourite.  :)

Any advice appreciated

Cheerz, Koicarp

Sowing times chart

Others have already told you in your welcome post to research square foot gardening.

Perfectly possible to grow the 3 things you mention in your space, although peas take up a lot of room (as do potatoes).  If you can widen it by 2ft to 7ft  that will help.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

runner beans are a great crop to grow if you are short on space because they are one of the most productive plants,       and i also grow salad leaf   a 2ft x 3ft space will give you enough to put on your sarny's every day as you cut what you want and it grows back.

radish carrots beetroot spring onion or swiss chard are also nice crops to grow and will not take up to much room .
and it has also been mentioned on here that you can get 9 sweetcorn plants in a square mtr.

i would also grow lettuice from seed as they are very easy   :)
and you could also fit some tomatoes in hanging baskets if you wish

Neither have I, but assuming you're only buying half a dozen packets you might as well go to Wilkinsons  (cheap but won't necessarily have what you want) or a garden centre.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Think of your bed in 4ft sections with beans growing along the back 1ft.
Just remeber that taller plants may shade the next section.

I use a seed supplier on eBay for 3 years who are DEFRA Registered and have had excellent results. They are called Premier Seeds and no matter how much you order, they only charge 59p postage.

For a small area I would concentrate on vegetables that:
1.   you really like,
2.   only taste great fresh (i.e sweetcorn)
3.   are expensive to buy in the shops.

If you can combine all three then you are on a winner
