I've decided to have a go at growing some broccoli this year and have read quite a bit of confliction information on how to go about this. Do i plant them out in pots then move them to the veg patch later or sow direct into the veg patch? I was wondering how you all did it.

There are several ways.

I sow them at home, one seed per module in a seed tray insert, pot them up into 3" pots when they have their first true leaf, then plant out when about 6" high.

They are started in the cold greenhouse, then hardened off once they've established in the pots.

I do it this way for a few reasons, germination is better than an outdoor seed bed, (nearly 100% and a packet lasts several years), they are more easily looked after and I've got club root, so putting them out with a good root ball gives them a better chance.

I now grow mine in modules and transplant them in the plot later. By doing it this way they have a nice rootball and are not checked when planting out in their final positions.

Years ago I  grew them in a seedbed but they needed to be transplanted in catchy weather, avoiding hot, sunshine. If this wasn`t possible, once transplanted I covered them with newspaper or an upside down flowerpot for maybe 4 or 5 days to help them get established. Oh, and really good watering, of course.

hi beth,dont forget to think about when you want to be eating your broc.if you sow to early you will be eating it july/aug.if you want autumn harvest sow later.also think about sowing successionally because otherwise it all comes at the same time and it tends to go to seed pretty quickly in my experience! :)just something to think about.
