Mangetout
« on: March 13, 2011, 10:16 »
Ive tried and failed last few years with peas, and been disappointed with quality and the yield so thought id try mangetout for the first time.  :(

I believe they grow taller (4 foot?), what do people use to stake? Is netting best?

I really dont know what yield to expect - how many plants would you suggest?

Ive some some in modules, and will do some more in another month or so.

Any other words of wisdom for me?  :)

You won't have seen this before, so I won't apologise to others for repeating the link.

I apply the same principle to mangetout, but on a smaller scale.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for the link - thats impressive!

Ive sown about 70 so far so ill likely need to do a few more

Not sure i like the thought of finding a maggot inside though so pondering if i should have just tried a different variety of pea (so at least i wont end up eating said maggot!!!!)

we never get tired of seeing that DD . :)

gazza,   i failed with my first lot of peas so i planted some mangetout and they were great infact i cant wait to pop some more in this year.
i did it the same way as DD but not quite as neat may i add and i also put netting over the seeded area to keep the mice off as judging by the little holes i found i think they had my first lot

I did some lower growing mangetout last year and they were fantastic. I only had two 4' rows, with spacing way further apart than DD's plan so much fewer plants, but still got a very decent crop off them. We were eating them for weeks. And in fact I did a second sowing later on, which gave us a second crop in summer/autumn. My only complaint was they were impossible to see for picking. I could search the row several times, and I'd still keep finding more I missed the first time.

This year I'm doing some heritage mangetout that grow to 5' or 6', and I'm going to follow DD's spacing plan, and that should hopefully give me a very good crop.
