Clay
« on: March 13, 2011, 09:44 »
I have a new allotment and it is completely bare and never been touched. We started digging it this weekend and it is definitely clay.  Now I am starting to panic that nothing will grown in the soil because I have read that the clay is so hard that vegetables struggle to push through it. Also in the summer it completely dries up.  Can anyone give me some tips please? Thanks I am very worried!

Hello MuddyDoris,
A clay soil can make digging and soil husbandry quite hard work, but it's a very fertile soil.
As joyfull has said, there are a lot of back posts about clay soils, the best advice is to dig/rotovate in lots of organic matter which can take the form of many things, Compost, leaf mould, manure......  This will all help to loosen the soil up and help with drainage. :)
