I collect old gardening books and one suggestion was to paint an upturned plant pot bright red and hang on a stake above the crop - sounds weird and I haven't tried it but you never know :D

Whose up for this idea? Shall we give it a try?  :D

I'll let you try.

I'll stick to what works.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Aw DD, its good to try alternatives, just imagine if it did work   no more netting to mess with, just a few red paint pots. Job done.    :D

Go on Rainie - I'll give it a go but I will have to cover some things - I can't risk losing much as I garden organically and lose enough as it is :D

All these methods work for a few days until the pigeon work out that they are not in danger. Even the gas guns lose their effectiveness if not reinforced with the occasional ounce of 6 shot. :)

LGG ok, lets paint a pot red and watch the pigeons, see what happens. I cant afford not to net either but will do a red pot as well, to see if it keep them away. Must be bonkers ey?!

8doubles, I know these things dont last except if its a gun but i cant do that, I just think each time someone shoots a pigeon down the road it wont be passing over my garden again.

Would feeding them an alternative work?

Personally I think not so whose been naughty and encouraged them?
Surely this is just a joke? Feed the birds.

I bought a catapult the other year but it didnt travel far enough - it took me 6months to realise it was for maggots and fishing. Oops.  :D

Would the gentleman who had maggot problems on his plot please refer to rainie to find out what type she was firing

Instead of books rainie, try maps. If the pigeons read them they might get ideas on where to go.

If you use books you wont need red pots, although I like them as a main crop, but you will have well read pigeons.

Perhaps a book on Menu's for pigeons, they might get the message.

Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

To tell you the truth I haven't a clue.... but guess, despite being bird-brains, the pigeons would soon get used to it sitting there.
