New spuds for Christmas ...
« on: August 06, 2006, 11:24 »
... if I'm going to do this I need to get them in sooner rather than later.  But I've tried it twice and ended up with a crop of the square root of * all.

Anybody got any tips to make sure that this year I get it right?

I have previously planted them in the open ground, but this year I have the option of planting them in an unheated greenhouse or I could dig deep down under one of my cold frames.

Last year I planted 5, one each in the largest pots I could find and kept them in my unheated greenhouse.  Only 2 made it, but as I planted them in late August, they weren't ready until New Years Day!!!  But keep them away from the glass, the 3 that didn't make it went all mushy, so maybe the frost got at them.  This year I'm going to put fleece over them after September even though they are in the greenhouse.

Good luck!!!!!

I am giving Christmas Spuds a try this year for the first time.  I have been told that the route to success is to try to keep them under cover - coldframe or greenhouse.  I have also been advised to grow them in a container - the best suggestion being a plastic dust bin with holes in it.

I have a lean to under which I intend growing mind - the important factor is keeping them warm and frost free.  They also need as much light as possible and regular watering without being drowned.

I will be starting mine next week and will post pictures as they get going.

Good luck
