I have planted half my peas in John Innes Number one Arthur Bowman's and the other half in B and Q multipurpose. Will be interesting to see which comes out better.

After a couple of weeks wait, none of my meteor or normal dried peas had germinated.  I chitted a couple (like sweetcorn) & both types were up in no time. A third of the normal dried peas in paper tubes are now up, and only 2 meteor are up, so I'm chitting a load more meteor now too.

I'm waiting a few weeks.

It's still cold underneath.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Soaking them for 2 days and then letting them dry out may not have done them a lot of good.

Should they be up now ? I have dug a couple out and they have little sprouts on them but not very long. I water them every day.

If they have started sprouting then let them grow, you just have to be patient ;)

As for the beans, i've never had a problem with mice getting to them, but you could just sow them in pots and plant out when they've germinated.

That's what a do for my mange tout without any problems, just start them in pots to get around the mouse problem.  I've given up on peas as I always get infested with pea moth maggots  :(.

I wonder how many people think mice have stolen their peas/beans, when the truth of the matter is they sowed soggy wet seed, into soggy wet ground, when it was far too cold for them to germinate before they rot away.

Just a thought....

Well I'm absolutely gutted. ALL my peas were a mush when I dug them out. Broad beans seem to be growing. Kelv wonder and Hurst all rotted except one. Thats nearly 4 weeks growing time lost for peas. Had to sow some more but doubt I will have them in time now. I will NEVER EVER soak peas or beans again before planting. It's a waste of time.

The idea of soaking them is to rehydrate the seed, if you put a seed into wet soil there's plenty of moisture in the soil to do that without the need to soak.

Wet seeds sitting in wet, cold soil are just going to rot.
