Broad beans and onions
« on: March 08, 2011, 20:12 »
Hello all

I have heard that beans (broad in my case) will not grow well near onions. I had some spare ground in my broad bean bed in which I put in some onion sets a couple of weeks ago. So my questions is; will the broad beans grow as expcted or should I take out the onion sets?

Thanks in advance,

Andy

I planted french climbing beans over the top of my overwintering onions when the onions were almost ready to come out, the beans grew well and I had a good crop, so it wasn't true for me!

cant say I've heard of this?  How are you growing the beans by the way?  Straight in the ground or sowing them first?

I sowed them back in Sept' or October and transplanted in November. They are looking strong and are coming along well.

It seems so reading about on the net. I was questioning it as other companions don't seem to work; onions to keep away carrot fly for example, so I was wanting to know if anyone has experience with gorwoing broad beans and onion together..

In one of my books it doesn't mention Broad Beans and Onions but advises against growing peas and garlic together - I just thought I'd mention it as they are similar - Sorry if that sounds daft ::)
