Globe Artichoke - Where & how to plant?
« on: March 06, 2011, 11:19 »
Hello Everybody.

I have recently sown some globe artichokes and they have just poked up through the soil this morning which has made me wonder where they would be best planted on my plot?

Should I plant in the shade?

Acidic/alkalne soil?

If anyone has had any luck growing from seed how long should I wait before plantning out?

Any and all advice would be great.

Thanks
Mr Sparkle

I put some 5 plants in 2 years ago which I bought on a whim. I planted them in an area which is the poorest soil I have, solid clay and holds water just because I didnt want to loose them. after 2 of the worst winters ever in Ireland they are poking their thorny little heads thru again this year. and I have never fed them since my first burst of enthusiasm and get around 20 heads per plant

They are a thistle or part of that family and basically will do well on any soil

The most tedious veg to prepare to eat and and worst veg for flatulance I have ever known !

Enjoy

they can get pretty big so make sure they are not going to shadow or crowd out anything else you have planted

Also, watch out for ants and aphids.  The aphids like to live between the scales of the artichoke head and the ants climb all over the plant to 'farm' them.  I tried these, but between pests and mangled fingers decided that I was better off buying my artichoke hearts from Waitrose!

But artichokes look so grand on the plot, the colour is beautiful and they stand very proud.... I have mine in the shady side of my greenhouse... only two plants and I love them... they are about three years old and last year produced such a bountiful crop... I think they are well worth growing if only for the look... the fruits are a bonus!   Mine are already about two feet high and looking really healthy, even though the nights are very cold and slight frost two nights ago.

Thanks for the advice.  The answer seems to be: anywhere.

That's kinda the answer I was after as I have a lot of sticky clay patches that they could go in.

I Agree with  above, I put mine in some really stoney soil last year and got about 10 heads straight off! Im worried now though after reading this, i cut mine down as suggested by a book i read and covered the crown with straw to protect from frost. Have i killed them!

I doubt it, have a look under the straw to see if they woken up yet :)
Brambles plot may be more sheltered/warmer than where you are.

My beds run North-South, and I have the North end reserved for permanent plants - including Jerusalem and Globe Artichokes - so they don't cast a shadow on the beds.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The leafy parts take up about 1-1.2 mtr but the flower heads go up to over 2mtr.
This means that if the wind flattens them out a bit they can cover nearly 4mtr.
Keep them well staked if you want them to look tidy.
Mine grow unkempt (and uneaten) in a rough patch with cardoons and buddleias , a good butterfly and bee corner. :)
