Protecting plants from fresh bird poo
« on: February 27, 2011, 17:35 »
Hmm i never thought i would start a thread entitled that lol.

So ive been up the lottie and found out that an area i cleared last year has only a few clumps of grass and moss growing on it instead of thousands of nettles like everywhere else ::)

On closer inspection it appears to be the local pigeon toilet, as they fly from a neighbouring gardens trees they deposit their offerings to their allotment god (not in the hope of brassicas i hope as i wont be growing them :tongue2: ).  I dont really want to cloche/net the whole bed as its quite a large area but obviously im going to need to protect new plants and the soil.

Has anyone had a similar issue?

It'll wash off!

You may find your biggest problem are the pigeons themselves once you get some tasty plants especially brassicas in there - and you'll end up netting anyway.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Make a scarecrow with lots of tassley things that'll flap around in the wind.  See if that helps  :)

Tried things like that, CD's etc..

Pigeons had their lunch when I left for mine. Only way is a physical barrier with our pigeons.

So it wont burn the plants?

Ive been told the local pigeons will strip a brassica in days (first thing the site manager told me lol) but i wasnt planning on growing anything they would find edible (i hope) in that spot anyway.

I feel you'll find they won't stick to that flight path if you put anything near it!
