I have a broody hen sitting on 6 eggs my question is this i have read that its best to feed a broody hen chick crumbs due to the high protein content as apposed to layers pellets is this correct ?

I feed my broodies chick crumb only when the chicks hatch and they love it (as do all hens if they can get to it so make sure your broody and chicks are kept seperate whilst they feed). The time before hatching the eggs when they are turned out of the broody coop (once or twice a day if they don't get off voluntary) they eat with the other girls so layers.

She is in a seperate coop so will keep her on pellets until the chicks hatch(fingers,toes and other bits crossed)

Last year I fed my broody straight wheat and a little cut maize and barley for the first 18 days, then slowly switched over to chick crumbs.

Feeding wheat will help to firm up the poo making it easier to pick up and dispose of (cos you certainly don't want it haging around!!!)
