Raised Bed Virgin
« on: February 24, 2011, 20:55 »
Hi All,

we'll I've been given a raised bed on some community plots in my area as I was interested in trying my had at growing some veg.
Its not a huge bed, its around 12' x 4'.
Now my question to you all is whats the best type of crops to be growing in these sort of beds bearing in mind Im a total beginer and Im also in the pennines.

So say Im starting on it next weekend and Im of to the local nursery / DIY store. What should I be looking at getting, what should I be thinking about preparing. etc etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.. thanks..

Personaly i would put letice, beetroot, spring onion and such like so you can enjoy the summer months ( it does taste so much better). Maybe some outdoor tumberling toms. on the edges?

Hi, I'm now on my second year of raised beds (i have 8 on a half plot). So I am lucky enough to have the best of both worlds.

Last year i grew tomatoes, strawbs, carrots, onions, sweet corn, cabbage, brussels, beetroot, peppers and chillies all in beds. The only disappointment was the sweet corn. I have just dug in loads of manure into the beds so that they are truly raised beds.

Thanks for all your replies.

The beds built on the side of a grassy hill, and raised up about 2'
