Trailing petunia seeds
« on: February 24, 2011, 13:45 »
Hi all,

last year i grew some lovely baskets and window boxes, a used alot of trailing petunia/surfinia and thought this year i'll grow them from seed to save some money.
However looking at the mainstream sites the seeds seem unbelievably expensive.
Im sure i never paid those prices when i bouth the plants last year, does anyone know where i can get an abundance of realistically priced seeds, would love red or white flowers but will settle for purple (like last years).

Look forward to your replies,

Paul

I thought surfinia were sterile.  I've always propagated them from cuttings.

You're right Aunty.  True Surfininias are usually cutting raised.  Some do set seed, but they don't come true.  The more frilly doubles are completely sterile.

There are other trailing petunias that are seed raised.  The Wave series are good hardy plants that get smothered in flowers and come in a good range of colours.  They grow like weeds as well, so you only need 3 in a 12 inch hanging basket to really make a show  :)

Oh no..... now I want them all down my boring wall opposite the serama pen..... New shoot.... would they do well there.... tis the wall that faces the setting sun!!

I have an automatic watering system that I got in wilkinsons 75% off sale a million years ago ... so could spend the weekend stringing that together!!!

I love flowers but cant be bothered with them.... sounds a good option :)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

Should be fine CC.  Bit early for them to go out yet as they are frost tender, but they could be started inside now.

Wave petunias are dead easy and a lot less hassle than most bedding plants, but they do need a lot of feeding and watering to really get them going.   Chuck some slow release fertiliser in your pots and rig up your watering system and all should be well  :D
