Soil Conditioners?
« on: February 22, 2011, 19:30 »

Anyone used the stuff that you see being 'composted' at/near landfill sites?

Is it of any use, even though it's just called a 'conditioner'?

Was on a site  today where a new facility is being built, and they grade it anywhere down to 10mm 'grains',
so is it possible to go and get it 'bagged' for yourself??

I've not seen it in shops or garden centres..   Or have I not been looking hard enough?  ::)

I suspect that the answers to your questions will depend on your local authority.

We have soil conditioner from our council - have to go to the site to bag it up and take it home.  I think it's called soil conditioner because it hasn't been tested to sufficient standards / levels to be called compost (or I could have made that up, can't remember!)

Sometimes it is also sold already bagged at the local household recycling centre.

Lots of my friends have used it but I am not sure about it.  Whilst the heaps at the landfill place will be hot enough to kill weeds / seeds, I am not sure how the chemicals might dissipate safely.  I'm not organic but I do like to know what I'm putting on my garden or lotty.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
