Traumatised hen - advice please
« on: February 21, 2011, 18:10 »
After the fox attack on Saturday evening, we still have one very traumatised hen.  She has been thoroughly checked over, no wounds, no broken bones however, she won't stand for too long.  She has spent yesterday and today in the chicken hospital - aka the bathroom - in the peace and quiet.  OH gave her water via a syringe yesterday but she is now taking small amounts of water and smaller amounts of food by herself.  She did a poo yesterday which was normal (indicating no internal damage me thinks) and this morning she laid an egg  ::)

Am I just being impatient in thinking she should be better than she is? Or could I be missing something?
2 German Shepherds, Kira & Bruin, 4 hybrid chicks Chryssie, Violet, Sweet Pea and Astra.

I think considering she is still with you and drinking slightly, those are good signs..... so keep doing what you are doing. I personally think you are doing a great job, just give her a bit more time.

Not sure when you should put her back with the other ladies and I wonder if that will help with her recovery? Someone else with a lot more experience will come along and confirm that you are doing great.

I would reintroduce her as soon as possible but if she is still having problems then bring her back in but this time with a friend. They usually recover better with a friend.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I'd agree that she could probably do with some company.  She may just be bruised or have a sprain if she won't stand for long - give her more time and keep encouraging her to eat and drink  :)

Thanks everyone, we're going to put her back with the others and see how she gets on.   ::)
