How hardy are Geranium seedlings
« on: February 19, 2011, 20:27 »
Hi, I have got 10 Geranium seedlings in a propagator in the back bedroom, they were sown 7 days ago and are now all up and at the two leaf stage.

I need the space in the propagator and want to put the geraniums into an unheated G/house.  Can this be done early in their growth? How hardy are they to cold but no frost?

Thanks FB

Are they pelargoniums or hardy geraniums?  Pelargoniums are not hardy and I wouldn't risk them in an unheated greenhouse as frosts are still likely for a couple of months.  I'm not sure about hardy geranium seedling hardiness.

Either way, as a general principle, don't take them straight from a heated propagator to an unheated greenhouse.  They need hardening off first or the shock will certainly do them no good.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi Yorkie,
Thanks for the reply.
I have checked the seed packet and they are 'Geranium Vista, Pelargonium  Half hardy perennial.'

Then I think it's a risk putting them out, even after being acclimatised.  What does the seed packet say about sowing / planting out dates and ongoing cultivation before planting out?

I composed a reply, which I've lost as I stopped went to check what you'd posted in the interim.

Essence - I don't think they will like an unheated greenhouse in February. I've just moved mine from the house to the heated one, but wound the temp up from "frost free".
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
