Barley Straw Pads
« on: August 10, 2007, 07:28 »
I have been told by a very experienced Duck and Goose breeder who I talk to at market to put a Barley hay pad in my pond to help reduce any algea build up.

I can't think what to use to keep the hay together, a hay net has too large holes.  Thought an old net curtain sewn into a bag may do it?  any ideas please?

Tightly stuff an onion sack, or an hessian sack if you can find one.  You can also leave it in the bale but it'll then take three of you to get it out.

Barley straw is what he meant.

T & M have them, or you could befriend a local seed potato grower / merchant.  Hessian will rot down too.

Another idea would be to create a sack by folding chicken wire and then sewing up two sides (with tying wire).

any chicken wire will do about a half inch mesh . cut a 4ft lenght off  fill the middle with barley straw and sew the open edge together . turn over the ends and flatten .tie a good piece of cord to it and put it in ya pond like wg says simple and effective   i use onion sacks

I've edited the title of this topic to read "straw" to facilitate searches in the future.

This is an interesting site for you to look at slowef.  It will help you with quantities.

As it rots down(will take months) lots of pond creatures make it their home and it helps make your pond water lovely and clear. Using lily pads and other floating plants to cover two thirds of your ponds surface area also helps to keep it crystal clear.
