Even if you don't like it as a vegetable on its own, try it combined with a few other tastes and textures before you give it up.

For example, chop it up, steam it a little and add it to creamy mushrooms on toast.  Yummo!

Or in a flan, omelette, frittata, quiche or anything eggy.

We even put it on our pizza!  We make gourmet pizzas with tomato, olives, some kind of sharp cheese (like feta or a sharp blue) and chard/silverbeet.

It's a cheap and easy way of bulking out the stronger tasting and/or more expensive ingredients in a recipe, and an excellent source of iron.  It's also easy to grow and easy to freeze in manageable chunks for later use.

Hmmm... I've just convinced myself to harvest and freeze another batch today...

Although I enjoy Swiss chard, perpetual spinach (similar but not the same) and love baby-leaf spinach raw as a salad leaf I won’t eat it too often as part of my day to day diet.

All contain, as someone said, oxalic acid. Not a problem in reasonable (whatever that is) amounts.

Too much can reduce absorption of calcium and may even exacerbate kidney stones as oxalic acid can form small needle-like crystals if eaten in too high a quantity.

Sorry – don’t want to put anyone off as Swiss chard and spinach are good foods but don’t over do it too often.

DD you’ve just got to give beetroot another chance! It can be delicious – so sweet when harvested in the summer rather than left to get old and earthy tasting. Try boltardy!!

Oh, I grow it & pickle it for others. Can't stand the smell of it cooking though!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'll eat any veg, except beetroot. Neither Mrs Digger nor myself like it. I think we were brainwashed by the stuff served up at school xx years ago. Tasted like mud.

Funny thing is, I've only ever met one other person who hates beetroot.  He's a lad from Leeds and he said exactly the same thing about school lunches.

Over here in NZ it's almost our national vegetable.  A burger wouldn't be complete without a thick slice of beetroot!  Even McDonalds puts beets on their burgers to satisfy the kiwi craving.
