Feeding fish to chickens
« on: February 16, 2011, 15:23 »
I'm having a clear out of my freezer and have some freshly caught trout that have been in the freezer since just before Christmas. I know that hens this time of year appreciate a bit of fresh protein and was wondering if it's okay to feed them cooked trout? They wouldn't have a lot of it, just one 2lb trout (uncooked weight) between 30 of them, so a few flakes each. They are from a wild fishery, so no chemicals have been fed to them.

how are you going to cook it? no butter - unless you want to donate it to me - I love trout pan fried with either parsley or almonds  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi

I can remember my father feeding fish to hens, I think it was mainly cod trimmings cooked with the mash. Even though there was not a lot of fish it tainted the eggs a lot.

Is there any sound better than contented chickens rosey away, far better tha whale song!

My dad did the same (I had the joy of putting the heads through the mincer) but I can't remember the eggs tasting any different.... I was only a little nipper at the time.  ;)

I'd bake them in the oven - no butter of course! I don't suppose it can be any different      (and probably a lot healthier) than giving the hens some of the cheaper cat food that is out there. I wouldn;t have thought one fish between 30 hens would taint the eggs much, since they'd only be getting a few flakes each. I'll give it a go.

When I was a child - many many moons ago now - I always used to pick over the chicken carcass at my grandparents. I loved chicken but one day I commented to my Grandfather that the chicken tasted of fish. He investigated and found that some commercial producers were feeding fish meal. I know you probably don't wish to eat your chickens but beware them tainting the eggs. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Well they had their trout yesterday, about the equivalent of a teaspoonful each and so far so good - no fishiness to the eggs. They went absolutely beserk over it, it was hilarious and like the Wacky Races where one would take a bit and leg it! I'll keep you posted!

Our chooks were the same.... tails up beaks down and a lot of flapping.
Sometimes found the cat in the middle of the scrum too.
