I took a Lidl stroll and. . .
« on: February 16, 2011, 10:45 »
Went shopping and in a large store I found a little basket of strange looking garlic bulbs. They were "Aglio Monobulbo". They were about 3/4" - 1 1/2" spherical jobs. I'm going to plant them up and see what grows. Garlic without the fiddly bit of peeling cloves may be a plus.          Cheers, Tony.

I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Think it's the milder British version.

Only slightly miffed garlic.

OK OK, I'm going.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Comes from China I think. It's like a little onion but is definitely garlic, rather like the ones you plant too late and don't split into cloves. I use it for stews and the like, less peeling and a handy size for the two of us. Use whole regular bulbs for roasting.

In the past, I have tried planting them with very disappointing results. They should split up into cloves when planted at this time.
I have also planted them out in the Autumn, but they cannot cope with our climate.
The real question is how do they produce them? My guess is that they lift the bulbs just before they split into cloves.

that's what they do round the med, lift early, eat green part as well and  they just call it spring garlic. I found it a little milder than later when it is ripe.

what happens when you plant a whole garlic bulb?do all the bulbs just grow bigger and split the whole bulb up ?Year on year,I can`t see how that works.Or is it just another way of propagation as well as seeding?
