Cat with blood in urine ?
« on: February 15, 2011, 07:21 »
Hi, last night my 12 year old cat Pants did a wee in the bath ( not done this before!) it was quite a puddle and had an amount of blood in it.
Kept him in overnight (he is usually an out at night kind of cat) and put litter tray etc down with just paper in the bottom , this morning there was another wee that didn't have any blood in it ..(and the 'number two' in tray too which was also normal  ???)
Not sure what to do now. last night I was all set to take him to the Vets first thing but now I am wondering whether to monitor him a bit longer first ?

He has been eating and drinking fine and is still his normal lively talkative self..

I realise I should probably take him to the Vets as a precaution but he is terrified of the car and will be verrryy stressed and be climbing the walls by the time he gets to the Vets

Any advice or similar experiences ??
1x Light Sussex, 1 x Brahma, 1x Buff Orpington, 2 x cats , 2 x guinea pigs, 4 x kids , 1 x husband

ring your vets for advice so that he doesn't get stressed out by a visit that may not be necessary.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Yes, I'd say ring first too - but they usually like to see the animal don't they in case there are any other signs that they would know link up that the layman wouldn't.

Our two cats also get very upset going but I would rather a stressful trip than ignoring something - but that's just me, I'm a worrier.

Hope Pants is OK

Thanks .. will give them a ring and see what they say , still yet to find a 'down to earth' local vets as my current ones 'don't do chickens' and I am sure I will need a chicken vet at some point!  ;)

with my vets I pointed out to them how many customers they were missing out on by not treating chickens as it is one of the fastest growing hobbies. They quickly sent some of their vets on courses for exotic pets (seems chickens come under this) and then also took on a specialist - she now treats a very large poultry supplier near us so cannot treat ours but is there to advise her collegues and us (often by phone).

Cat's can be prone to kidney trouble.

From experience, I'd go vet's asap, especially older cat's.

Hope pants is ok.

I would take him in case it is kidney problems.

We didn't notice one of our cats had a kidney problem for a long time as it was such a gradual deterioration. Hopefully, it will be nothing serious, but I would check just to be sure, especially after the bath incident.

Fingers crossed that it's nothing.

Hi, Dildaisy our tom cat has the same poblem about 2/3 times a year, firstly contact your vet. the prob with our cat is he dosen"t drink enough fluids and this causes a build up of crystals in his urine causing him to pass blood, he is now on a strict diet of wet food only anything in jelly or gravy. the reason he peed in the bath apparantly is he is telling you he"s not well according to our vet.  very clever animals cats.  8)
when it comes to age we are all on the same boat.......But some of us  have been on board that that little bit longer

Thanks for all your advice
Took him to the Vet and after my warning him that he wasn't too keen on Vets ..Pants emerged from his box all purrs  ??? maybe he knew he was going to help him ?
He thought it was a probably a urine infecton ...So he had a shot of AB's and a painkiller and now on wet food ( he was a dry during the day and wet at supper time cat before) returned with a sample and all seems fine (touch wood)
Plus have found that this Vet (that Pants seems to like!) would be interested in dealing with chickens too so found a new vet !!
and isn't that clever about peeing in the bath to let you know?.. although the Husband was less impressed about the peeing on his rugby bag  :D (personally I don't think it affected the overall smell of the bag anyway)

pleased it seemed to be quite minor and yes what a stroke of luck finding a vet who your cat likes and one who will treat chickens  :D.
if you let me have their details I will add them to our poultry friendly vets list  :)
