I think it is worth putting Salmo`s post from a while ago up for newcomers to see, it may prevent a few people planting way too early.

These are temperatures that plants are naturally happy to grow at and need to be fairly steady for good growth, not 100f during the day and freezing at night.

A plant that is checked (stopped) by cold often takes a long time to get going again and you lose any benefit of an early start.
We all want to get started but some of us have already learned the hard way not to waste seed by starting before conditions are right.

The latest varieties of sweetcorn require higher temperatures to germinate, 15-16 C.
