Hi,
I am going to try some grafting of various apple species on to an existing tree (raised from seed, vigourous growth but useless fruit).
I have never tried this before and have simple instructions found on internet.
I live in South West England, therefore we have a milder climate that most of Britain. So, when should I think about grafting?  March? April? or earlier/later?
Also, what is best to graft with? tape/compound? or can I use beeswax? (I have a good stash from my hive!). I also read that I could use raffia - is this effective?
Any advice please.

I've just responded to another one on scion grafting, and the recommended time to do it is when you see the tree buds start to appear and before they open.

I don't graft myself, but I've heard that raffia is excellent as it will eventually breakdown and release the then thriving graft. Personally, I'd find some way to seal the top of the cut (if that's your intention) to keep out the heavy rains the UK usually gets. If it's a side graft, then raffia alone should work. You never want something on so tight that the expanding trunk and branches will be strangled by and start to grow around.

I shall give raffia a try and I am in the process of making a sealant with my beeswax and some veg fat!
Thanks for the tip on tightness, I shall endevour not to strangle the grafts!
