Manure
« on: February 11, 2011, 21:04 »
My plot has been well manured in the past, but I cannot  use any this year.  Will be Ok just to use chicken manure pellets and some BFB

So many of my fellow allotmenteers are dashing around like mad things with that "manure" glint in their eyes :D :D  and some of what they are using is just like straw - but it makes me feel as though I am not doing things properly

nothing wrong with chicken manure pellets. If you want to add some humus to soil use in conjunction with compost home made or bought.

Cheers HH
Keep digging

Can't remember the last time I added manure  ::)

Must try to do better  8)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hubby and his mate have spent this morning fetching manure and it is now in a big pile next to the allotment.  Rugby beckons this afternoon so we are hoping to spread it tomorrow and then if need be carry on next weekend.

We currently only have Jerusalem artichokes and leeks in so have covered everything up with black plastic.   When we spread the manure should we put the black plastic back over it or leave it off?
I always find that work gets in the way of life.

I think I'd leave it off - will enable the weather to rot it down.  Just make sure you you cover back up again once weeds start growing

I would cover it if its fresh manure. Stuff rots better when warmer, same theory as covering a compost bin with carpets etc. Also rain will wash nutrients away. Covering will keep it drier, meaning it does not cool as quickly, meaning it rots quicker.
