It"s not a case of resorting to astro turf for bedding, i used to work on a chicken farm and that was the bedding medium of choice after trying numerous other substrates, i.e  straw, woodshavings, and shredded paper, there is no real danger to the birds feet whilst sitting in the nestbox, a different matter if the full run was covered in astro turf as you have stated. i find it works well for my chooks, may not work for someone else, esy to clean and not going to harbour mites etc as opposed to woodchips.
when it comes to age we are all on the same boat.......But some of us  have been on board that that little bit longer

I have had no problems with shavings in my nest boxes. I put it in pretty deep and there is a lip to stop it coming out. Also they are cheap and last ages.  :DBev
