I`m trying Rocket this year for the first time, bought 3 kilos in Wilkinson for £2.98 - 44 tubers, about four weeks ago. I`ve had them chitting in the bedroom since then and for an experiment I planted one in a small pot in moist compost and it has made twice as much growth with white roots three inches long.

As ground conditions are very good for a bit of fun I planted the one that was in the pot and five others today to see what happens!
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

Be careful.

You've still probably got 3 months of protecting those spuds from frosts. One whiff and they'll be gone.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ah I have a plan. I`ve stockpiled loads of leaves that the council delivered to the allotments in the autumn. When the greenery emerges and when a frost is forecast I`ll cover the spuds with the leaves! Says he hopefully!

How are you going to tie the leaves down when it gets windy?

Ah, that`s an interesting one, well they`ve not blown away in the two or three months they`ve been piled up on my plot presumably because they`ve been wet and also they heated up so they have partially decomposed.

I may have to wet them or throw some mesh on top.

Pentland Javelin as it rated well in the polls

Lady Crystl as I think they are the 'Pembrokes' I love so much but had to get them mail order which wasn't cheap

Probably not a 1st early but I grew Pink fir apple last year and although they were delicious we only got about a pound of them and many of them were tiny

1st earlies:Lady Chrystl, International Kidney, Red Duke of York, Adora
2nd earlies:Estima, Linzer Delicatesse, Vivaldi, Maris Peer

I went to Dundry Nurseries so I could get small quantities of a wider selection. It was mind boggling

If you can get there I highly recommend them. Great selection, quality spuds, good prices & helpful staff.

I got Pentland Javelin as the allotment shop had 'em and I'd read all the good reviews on here from last year!  Also went for International Kidney for no particular reason :)

I usually grow only salad potatoes (Charlotte) and maincrop (King Edwards) but now I have my allotment and have the space I'm trying Maris Bard as the blurb sounded good and I could by them by weight in my local garden centre. So its 'wait and see'. This year is going to be trial and error for us on a new allotment site. :)

I'm growing Sirtema. I'm gardening in Brittany and my French neighbours tell me that's the best for the area. It only takes about 85 days. Charlottes are my main crop

We've gone with PJs and Rockets, but they only went into trays to chit at the weekend.

Have we left it to late?
