Just to keep the bag from touching the compost really and to give them a bit of air. You could ask why the lids of propagators are several inches high.

I've just put my tomatoes in the propergator :)-
Latah
Black Cherry
Gardners Delight
Incas F1
Galina
Rose de Berne

Chillis have all been potted on into the compostable pots and are on windowsill.
Broadbeans are now all showing and are outside in the cold frame with the lid down
Lettuces and brussel sprouts all showing in heated greenhouse

Leeks sown last weekend but no show yet!
