My tomato seedlings are 1" high and don't look too bad. My Dad's were sown on the same day as mine, but look better than mine. His always do. I don't know his secret.

I sowed broad beans in the house yesterday.

I tried that, but Mrs Digger hoovered them up!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I have sown Purple sprouting (summer variety) which is emerging in the greenhouse, and today I thought I would give some cabbage a go (Greyhound) - needs 10 -15 C to grow which the greenhouse is now reaching.  I also planted some Basil in pots inside propagators made out of meat containers.  I have more seed if they fail.

I thought I was well behind with planting but I see I'm not.  Last year's winter is still fresh in my memory so I'm leaving most things till later - but hey its nearly March  :)

You are brave to admit you have planted onions! :D

I am chitting potatoes merrily on my dining table. No room for dining though - must be the Irish in me

I was going to start seeds off today, but I'm holding off until tomorrow (yay!!) to try this Lunar planting, as the sites about it seem to suggest that a full moon is a pretty helpful time for strong seedlings.

I'm doing:
Chili peppers...
  • Pretty in Purple Rainbow Chili
    Santa Fe
    Hungarian Yellow Hot Wax Chili
    Anaheim
    Dedo de Mocha
    Purple Venezuelan
    Rotoco Pepper (hot)

Sweet Peppers...
  • Sweet banana peppers
    Marconi Yellow
    Kaibi Round No 2
    Sweet Chocolate
    King of the North
    Californian Wonder

and I've got some Sweet Spanish Onion seeds I'll be sowing too.

 :) :) :)

Got my compost all ready in trays and warming nicely near a radiator to take the chill off the compost- it was outside.

Can't wait!!! :)
I might be brave and do a tomato or two as well... but i'm just a daredevil like that!

This sounds like quite a comprehensive list, but don't the tomato packets dictate that February is early?

Yes it's time to sow those now.  I sowed mine about two weeks ago in a cold greenhouse and they are all germinated and doing well :)

This sounds like quite a comprehensive list, but don't the tomato packets dictate that February is early?

I've always started chilli in feb and not had a problem- wouldn't consider starting them any later- they need a long growing season.

I've only done tomato once at the end of Feb and they were quite large plants when i planted them out, but i got an amazing crop that year - way earlier and everything ripened before the autumn frosts came.... admittedly i was v lucky with the weather that year when i planted them out. It's a risk isn't it? If it goes wrong, oh well! *shrug* there's always plan B.

I think I'll only sow a couple seeds now - to plant out to the polytunnel around end April... which is correct according to the DG Hessayon book i have, about cold greenhouse planting.
Worth a shot for a chance at an earlier crop? I have a paraffin heater on standby!
